The Texas Comptroller Provides Updated Guidance on the PreK Private School Voucher Rules
The state finalized the rules for its new private-school voucher program — under Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) — which will launch in the 2026-27 school year. Families using the program are expected to receive about $10,300 per year per student for private school tuition or other approved educational expenses. Additional allocations: home-schoolers are eligible for roughly $2,000, while students with disabilities could receive up to $30,000.
The rules clarify that eligible preschool (pre-K) children will get the full voucher amount — fixing a discrepancy from earlier draft rules that would have given them only the homeschool amount. Application timeline: private schools and existing vendors serving students with disabilities can begin applying Dec. 9, 2025; general family applications open Feb. 4, 2026.
