Kindergarten Readiness Drives Third Grade Success
A new statewide research study, Kindergarten Readiness Drives Third Grade Success, highlights the powerful connection between early learning and long-term academic outcomes for Texas children. Conducted by Michael Villarreal, PhD of CML Insight and funded by Early Matters San Antonio and UP Partnership, the study found that children who entered kindergarten meeting developmental benchmarks in language and emergent literacy were significantly more likely to achieve third-grade reading and math proficiency across every student group examined. The findings also underscore both the opportunities and challenges facing Bexar County, where kindergarten readiness continues to trail statewide averages. The report explores statewide and local findings, the long-term impact of early learning investments, and recommendations for strengthening early childhood systems, instructional support, and family engagement across Texas and Bexar County.
